I want to share some wonderful highlights from a family vacation that remind me how easy it is for us all to succeed.
I really loved getting so much time with my niece and nephews: Sophie (going on 4 ), Darby (going on 8 ) and Nick (13 1/2 ). Their rebounding energy and willingness to play and just be themselves reminded me of the path of the inspired entrepreneur.
I hope you enjoy these stories. I feel really energized from just hanging out with these kids!
Play on!

Waiting at the Bus Stop
Darby and Sophie are settling in at the old farmhouse where I grew up. It is on the corner of a country cross roads with lots of trees and a long driveway.
Uncle Marc and I were invited every day to join Darby as he got on or off the school bus at the end of the old driveway. We even played some red-light-green-light while we waited.
Darby is growing up quickly and so proud to be going on the bus to second grade at his new school. I noticed that he always made sure that we did the mushy-hugging-part of sending him off before the bus arrived.
His enthusiasm and attention to being his best were contagious. I realized he wanted to get our hugs and then go out into the world as his consummate self, ready for anything.
Just as an entrepreneur needs to rejuvenate with inspirational play each time we go out to make our marks and build our dreams in the world.
Power Lipstick
Sophie was a sight to behold with her pink laptop and pink electric guitar, both of which had great pro-girl inspirational voices and music pouring from them! Her room is flush with pink things (the age and the stage), including her favorite, the beauty shop.
Far from the stereotype that might come to mind, she was in her domain. When I was her client, she was in charge, creating something amazing on my head with great creative intensity … and balance! When her mom called, “Dinner!” She set her brush down with some flourish, scampered to the door, and turned back to me with a persuasive grin. “Wait here. I’ll be back. I have to go have my dinner now!” Sure she needs to work out the timing with her customers, but she’s got a handle on her priorities, juggling her needs with that of her fans.
This pink domain is a base for more than creating beauty. Just this morning she had fun waving her “power lipstick” around the room like a big magic wand, wiping out bad guys and anyone who seemed to get in the way of her greatness.
Couldn’t we all use a power base like that? A place where we psych up and remember who we really are and how much fun life is?
What can you do to create or bolster your power base today? Is it a room? An activity? A time of day? An experience you give yourself?
My suggestion is to make it:
- just enough of a ritual that you go there often,
- with plenty of favorite things to remind you who you are,
- and lots of freedom to do whatever you feel like doing!

Bowling with Imagination
Saturday was a fun afternoon of bowling with Sophie, Darby and Nick. Nick’s parents, Ted (my brother) and Kim, were along for the fun as well. They had bowled a lot while dating years ago and both started off with strikes much to our amazement.
At first Nick just couldn’t get points on the score board and I could tell he was getting really bummed out. The younger kids were having a relatively easy time of it in the bumper lane. Nick was grappling with the vacuum created by the gutters in the lane for everyone over 8 years old.
I plopped down next to this aspiring street hockey goalie/sci-fi fan/video game wiz. I put my arm around him and said with a knowing look, “Nick, I believe that if you change your mind, you can change your game.” He looked at me … and accepted the challenge without a word.
Nick’s turn came up just then and he got up and rolled a strike! “With the Force, I am,” he said with a big grin, in the voice of Yoda from Star Wars.
How could changing your mind bring you a strike instead of a gutter ball?
